What To Do for 55+ Nutrition

According to the National Institute of Aging, which is part of the National Institute of Health, people over 55 should focus on eating foods from each food group to maintain a healthy diet. As of January 2025, the U.S. Department of Agriculture maintains five food groups:

  • Fruits: We recommend focusing on citrus, avocados, and guava to keep a steady source of natural sugars and vitamins.
  • Vegetables: Try including more spinach, broccoli, and sweet potatoes.
  • Grains: You should include whole grains and less refined grains where possible.
  • Protein: Lean proteins such as fish, chicken, and lean red meat are best for people over 55 because they are low in fat.
  • Dairy: As people age, dairy remains an important part of a healthy diet as it delivers key nutrients and minerals to the body, such as calcium.

Additionally, people over 55 should work to limit their intake of refined sugars, saturated fats, and sodium.
